I am looking into renting a 12' moving truck (i.e., box truck) for a cross-country move. I am finding the rates to be outrageous. I've tried Penske, U-Haul, Enterprise, and Budget. Are there any other reputable companies?

Also, do you have any suggestions as to the most affordable emergency roadside assistance plans. These companies want like $200-300 for emergency roadside, which is obscenely expensive. I thought about purchasing a AAA membership. However, it's not clear how much that would help me if the truck broke down. After all, all of my earthly belongings would be inside it and I would still need to get them to my destination. My understanding is that, if you have emergency roadside through the aforementioned companies, they will dispatch a new truck if they can't get yours started and load it.

Thanks for the information.

I find that those smaller trucks are foot for foot more expensive to rent compared to larger vehicles. Just for fun, try going up one size and the next and see if the price goes up, stays the same, or possibly even lower.

12' and 16' are the same. My issue is that I live in Cali and they charge more for rental trucks here.
