Since the post office only holds mail for 30 days what do you do with your mail if you live 3 months in one state and 9 months in another? Do you put in a change of address each time you leave current home?

We use a mail receiving service (you can google them). You can use them in any way you like: either change the addresses of all your business dealings to this service's address, or forward your mail every time you go away, to this service's address, who will then send it to you whenever you like.

Nearly all of them advise you every time a piece of mail comes in; most take a picture of the envelope so you can see what it is and usually figure out whether you want them to hold it, discard it, send it to you (anywhere in the world), or what. You can also purchase things and have them sent to the service's address, who will then send them on to you, repack them into smaller containers if you want, or not.

Mail receiving services take the problems out of what to do about the mail when you are traveling. They charge a monthly fee for their services, and you pay by the pound to have a package of mail sent on to you. We have used ours for about 5 years and have never had a problem.

Put in a temporary change of address~ forwards all first class mail to your vacation address until the temporary move is over. I get my mail forwarded this way for 5 months out of every year and have for over 10 years.

We use USPS Premium Forwarding. Once a week, they mail all of your mail to your temporary address. We tried the 'free' USPS temporary but it was haphazard at best.

Premium Fwding isn't cheap but it is fully reliable.

One of the thing to keep in mind, that the Forward Address database , and address correction services are used by many mailers, to update there customer databases, Even if you don't get any mail from them in that time period.

There is a one or two month lag in the updates, but your forward address will be your "New" address. If you will be going back and forth each year, you might want to look into a Virtual Mail service who scan's your mail, and you (Pay) for scanning the envelope, you chose what you want physically to you, Opened and scanned, or destroyed.
