Budget's rate was $200 lower than Penske but when I called in Penske was able to match it (though not automatically, they had to check with a supervisor). A few other fees were lower with Penske than Budget (ex: add'l driver fee). Apparently not all of the 16 ft Penske trucks have CD players so I am crossing my fingers that we'll get one that does!

Anyone run into issues with returning a truck to an unmanned return station? I've only rented a car once before and am concerned about running into added charges @ the return site, particularly if no one is there to review the condition of the truck with us. Also, has anyone run into issues with trucks being broken into while lodging en route to your move site? How secure are the truck locks?
Take some of the money you saved and buy a CD playing portable stereo. (Just a suggestion.)

I've turned my Uhaul into unmanned sites PLENTY of times. Also rent a cars... plenty of those, too. Never had a problem.

I bought my own lock for the Uhaul. They don't give you one, but they normally have them for sale. I'm psycho about security.

Bertha,
That is your opinion, and you are entitled to it......but some here who do not feel that way may be offended. That being said, I think it is wise to check into EVERY option one may have, then go with the best.

I'll be moving in about two years or so, so I appreciate ALL the opinions and help I've read here. I've learned a lot here...I'll be cautious, especially when opinions are confirmed by others over and over. I've also learned many good hints here.....

Frank

I have no beef with U-haul when it comes to renting a car dolly, or a trailer, but I would never use their trucks for anything more than in town rentals. Every U-haul truck I see is old, , like 10-20 years or older. Hell, I still see the U-Haul trucks built on the Ford Ranger chasis that is 20 years old. Every Penske truck I have seen is New, lower mileage, and in great shape. I have never seen a rough penske truck.

I've rented from U-Haul 3 times, but this last time we went with Penske, and I have to say, I was much more impressed with Penske's customer service. We have had issues in the past similar to others here where U-Haul dealers were rude, trucks weren't ready on time, etc. Penske was so professional!

We also have lucked out the last two moves: for both this move with the Penske truck and the last move with the U-Haul truck we have been given brand new trucks. Given then, that this is a good scenario in which to compare the two trucks, I asked my boyfriend which he preferred driving, and he said the Penske, far and away.

So we will definitely be going with penske from now on.

Penske was way cheaper than alternatives because of unlimited miles. Truck ran well, got 9 mpg for a 5000 mile trip, and all aspects of the rental were handled professionally. Will definitely rent Penske again.

After looking at our options we decided to go with U-Haul on our move from Florida to Tennessee.

We are glad we used U-Haul.

The two 26' trucks we got were like new. One had 7,000 miles on it and the other had 27,000 miles. The trucks were very clean and comfortable to drive, everything functioned like it should. We averaged 7.1 miles per gallon and the trucks easily went 75 mph on the interstate in overdrive pulling a loaded 6X12 trailer.

No regrets with the U-Haul trucks and we would certainly use them again without reservation.
