I'm in the process of planning for a move from TX to Southern Cali. We are moving with two toddlers and one small dog into a smaller place (3 bedroom condo).
Do I need to bring basic things like dishes, utensils and cooking pots? What about the big stuff? I have a 7 foot long solid wood tv console that's is heavy and was purchased for $700.

I'm not sure what is the criteria for keeping or getting rid of.

Strange question, unless you are moving into a place that is fully furnished ...

"basic things like dishes, utensils and cooking pots?"
What do you think you need when you get there?
Planning to buy all new stuff?

Look at the cooking stuff you have collected.
What is the minimum you need to have on hand to cook some meals?
Time to replace some of your tableware?
There is always some old stuff you can easily throw away and get better things later maybe?

The big stuff.
How much trouble to move?
How much to replace?
Will it even fit in your new place?

Do the same with your personal items.

Warning.
Personal documents!!
Do not pack and send with the rest. Keep it with you at all times during your move.

Stuff to get rid off:
Throw away or drop off at Goodwill Or Deseret Industries.

It's entirely subjective.
Your stuff which is nice quality, in good condition and actually used on a regular basis ...
Your stuff which is cheaper, worn or broken and not used very often ...

Yeah I'm having trouble deciding on that.. Like my massage chair I bought for 1k (used). It's heavy so it will cost a lot to move but then trying to sell it, I will take a big loss on it.

I brought my furniture as it was fairly new and I haven't regretted it. You'll definitely need most, it not all, of your kitchen things. I ended up buying things I left behind, mainly organizers and regretted getting rid of them.

Another thing was plants. I couldn't find an answer as to whether I could bring them so I gave them to friends. I'm fairly certain you CAN'T bring them into California.

The massage table - that's a tough one. Try to find out how much it would cost to include in the moving as opposed to selling it. That one you may have to go with your gut on. The things I regret not taking I have not been able to find similar or equivalent items, some I had gotten cheaply at garage sales or thrift stores but just can't find them here so think carefully about cost of moving as opposed to buying where you move to.
