I just called Penske and I am very happy. I had a quote from u-Haul for $368.00 and Budget for $357.00. I went online for Penske and they quoted me $654.00. I called the 800 number and she said that the online price was correct and I said thanks but I will chance it will Budget. She asked me what Budget quoted and replied that Penske will not compete with U-Haul but they respect Budget and she offered me a 16' truck (4 feet more than what I wanted) for $400.00 So I am more than please so far.

Actually - sometimes Penske will offer discounts not mentioned on their website. My husband and I just reserved a 22' truck for a move to VA in a few weeks. He mentioned the name of the company that he works for while on the call and got a 20% discount! Turns out that his company is on some kind of partner list. It was totally unexpected, but obviously very appreciated.
I guess it's true what they say - "never hurts to ask!"

Ottomobeale, a big ol' "Tip of the Hat" to you from this grateful trucker! (Especially the "Pull forward after fueling" tip; far too many of my fellow "professionals" think the fuel islands are a great place to park for shopping, etc. ) I'm always more alert when I see a rental truck coming because most folks just don't understand how to drive them... (No offense, but "chase cars" scare me, too; many of those drivers try to stay right on the rear bumper of the rental truck they are following and become OBLIVIOUS to anything else around them...) I hope you found that most truckers will blink/flash their lights for you when it's clear for you to return to the lane in front of them; I do when it's safe. Low clearances are a big concern for rental truck customers; you've ALWAYS got to know what's ahead, above, behind, beside AND below your truck. On state routes and interstate highways, clearances MUST be at least high enough to accomodate the standard 13' 6" trailer (which is taller than rental trucks) but on local roads and in apartment complexes and gas stations, etc., it's "DRIVER BEWARE"!!!

I drove pickup trucks towing horse trailers so I think I can handle a moving truck!

Wow you guys are right about the prices. That got me thinking. Within 4 months we will be moving to Texas and the one way small trucks are $2200. We will be selling everything and moving with little more then can fit into a large cargo van. But no one has one available in August.
No way would I trust my life driving a Uhaul so dont even mention it. They are very dangerous vehicles.
Back to the drawing board.....

Thanks for the kind words Crew Chief.
I stand by my chase car thing. My wife did not tailgate. She did use the station wagon like a linebacker a few times tho. Far too many times people did illegal things to pass me. If I want to get into the passing lanes and you are already there I understand and accept that. If I want to get off and am signalling such, crossing the solid lines to pass right of me and prevent me from getting off is the kind of thing that I always wish there was a cop around for. (But they never are) A chase car dropping back a bit providing distance is just the ticket for that one.

Ottomobeale, too many cars think that when any kind of truck turns on a turn signal that means: "Speed up!" to them...

more info on gas mileage?
I'm looking at renting a 16-26' truck in a month or so, and the rates online seem really low, I'd love any further input on mpg for their gas and diesel models.

I just drove a 22' Penske Diesel truck from Upsate NY (Canadian border) to Louisiana. Penske is SO much better than U-Haul or Rider. The trucks are newer, and the rates were cheaper. 10% discount for AAA and an additional 10% off for their "on-line" rate, which I asked for by phone.
I drove 1,600 miles and the total diesel cost was around $950. I figure with the full truck and a car in tow, I average just under 9 miles per gallon.
The total trip took me 41 hours (but only 29 hours was actually driving).

Did you have to go into a weigh station with that size truck and your trailer in tow? Did you get pulled over during the trip? I am just curious.
