Does anyone know what their variable rates are based on? They encouraged me to lock in the internet rate, and said with 48 hours I could change the date as many times as I wanted, and with 48 cancel altogether with nothing owed.

I thought you could only change the date twice without risking a change in rental rate?

I don't know about unlimited changes. I have a standing reservation with Penske, and my confirmation e-mail says that I can change the date twice without a rate change.
I'm glad I locked in the reservation when I did (ummmmm -- February?), because the price has more than doubled since then.

just my fyi I rented with penski 2 times and one more this week each trip was 2000 miles the first time was with a 22ft truck the other two will be 26 ft trucks.. you know you can get 12% off with AAA so for me it was worth it to save 200 for the 50$ member ship or what ever it was also.. negoniate with them they are flexable the truck I rent in a few days is like 1000$ off the normal price also have them check some times if you drop it off a little further or go and get it a little further away you can save some money.. Im picking mine up 50miles away for 200$ then I called a week before picking it up and changed it to the one closer to mine!! just some tips good luck.

The insurance is one I need to look into, and what is already offered under policies I already have.
I reserved a 22' truck, with a flat bed car tower, from Grand Rapids, MI, with 3 extra days, unlimited miles, for $1750. Pods or Umove wanted $1500 for the first pod, and then another $1500 for a second pod. They also couldn't guarantee the date that it would arrive at the destination. I don't like being there, with no idea when it would arrive, especially considering we are going out there without an apartment leased.

5000 mile trip loaded a 22 foot diesel truck with 4000 lbs of stuff. Rental was $800, fuel was $1500 (Jun'09)
I routinely got 9 mpg going 60 to 65 mph. Driving very conservatively (55, slowing to 50 uphill) I got 12 mpg.
Note: get a AAA membership and the 10% Penske discount more than pays for the AAA membership, and then AAA provides free maps and roadside assistance - well worth it.
