I'm new to the full-time work force, and the company I'm going to be working for has said they will pay for my moving expenses up to X dollar amount, to be reimbursed on my first paycheck (given I submit receipts). I'm also making a spreadsheet to make it easier for both of us.
Besides the obvious expenses such as boxes/tape/bubble wrap/furniture covers, truck rental, gas, etc...what can/should I submit? Can I ask for food reimbursement for having to eat out on the road? We're having a friend come along to share the driving, so I'm assuming even if I asked for food reimbursement, his food would have to be excluded. We're not staying in any hotels as we're stopping by to visit friends and family along the way, or else I would think that was ok to add in.
Thanks! I've never done this and neither has the company I'm going to work for. And, I don't like asking silly questions if I can get around it. I expect a couple hundred dollars in food expenses so if I can get it paid for that would be very helpful as we're on a tight budget.
I have handled these types of reimbursements. If your friend is eating while helping you drive you should absolutely request reimbursement. Your food is a given. A huge bar tab would likely be kicked back at you, but reasonable meals should be covered without question.
Other moving expenses I have seen covered include deposits on rental units and deposits on utilities.
That's awesome. I thought food would have been stretching it. I think we'll be able to max out the reimbursement without even adding in our rental deposit, especially with the increase in fuel costs lately.
Ask the relo company. They should have a document that list everything they pay for. People try to get away with so much that they have to write it all down.
I don't have a relocation company. I am dealing directly with the company I will be working for, and they didn't specify what was covered. I guess I will save all receipts, itemize on a spreadsheet, and see what I get back.

Unless it is a small company they will have the rules written somewhere? Are they paying the taxes on this income for you? They should report some things as income in your W2.

Companies that I worked for ran those through A/P instead of payroll. It was never reported as income.
It is a small company, and I am the first employee to be brought in from out of area. No idea about taxes.
I am the first employee to be brought in from out of state for my new job. I wasn't offered and didn't ask for relocaiton money, as I know it would be pushing it to ask for it.
3 days of hotel, food and gas.
it won't be too bad and I know if money is tight when i get into town and I need the basics, im sure they'll help me out.
