We are moving from Atlanta to Northern California. My husband wants to get a new(used) car. He says it will be cheaper to buy here but relo company will only transport one car. Here are our choices
1) Sell car to CarMax. Fly over there and buy new car in CA.
2) Trade car for another and save sales tax on portion of trade in.
a) Then pay to move new car and fly over there.
b) Road trip with a 3yo and a 7 mo. Not to mention gas prices.

The only issue with option 1 is the additional stress of finding the right car since he wants a used car.

Does anyone know how much it costs to move a car? How much will we really save in sales tax. TIA

There are sites that will give you estimates on shipping costs for your car. Do be careful if you go this route to find a reputable auto shipper. My guess would be over $1,000, easily, because of the distance, the summer season (a lot of people moving), and current high fuel prices.

If you have a friend or family member that wants an adventure, you could offer to pay all their expenses for driving the car out. Might stay under the shipping costs depending upon the gas mileage and the accommodations.

Just got quotes for myself from Ca to TX and it was from $695 to $855 and I put dates of Sept. So I am sure it will be more for Atlanta to CA. You can google auto shippers and fill out a short form and get hit with emails for quotes.

We moved from CA to NY and opted to transport the 2008 Jeep Wrangler. It was $1200 (ouch) but arrived in perfect condition. I figured it would cost about $600 just for the gas to drive it ourselves! So another $600 for someone else to get it there and 3K less on the odo.

We also had a low-end toyota that we sold before we left to Carmax and since it was a car that got high MPG, we actually got a halfway decent price for it - enough so that if we wanted to, we could buy a similar car on the other end of the move and not have to pay the transport fee. So it all depends. We didn't need two cars in NY, at least not yet.

We already moved. We ended up selling the car to CarMax. And for anyone that is moving to CA if you bring a car that you have owned for less than a year you will have to pay use taxes.

Yeah if your going to CA, get a new car, they have all these rules and regulations, I once took an old car from Colorado out to California and it couldn't even pass smog though it was a tiny Japanese car (85 octane probably). Plus with the economy nowadays, I hear they are offering deals like buy one get one free.
