So my husband and I are moving 3200 miles away next week. Technically, I'm moving first and he's going to come out later when we're able to rent our house here. He's driving me out there and then flying back 2 weeks later. I had planned to load as much into my car as possible (Mini Cooper.. so not that much, lol). But now his daughter is coming with us since she really wants to see Seattle. Now we're limited to the small trunk space, which half will be taken up by bags with our necessities.
I'm shipping all of my clothes tomorrow so it's there when we get there, as well as some dishes and cookware. My biggest question now is... what else should we ship now, and what should wait till he comes out? I've got a bunch of picture frames, and movies, but it seems like now I've hit a wall. Just random decorating items, which, may seem stupid, does help make a place feel like a home. Do I bring the cookbooks when I can get all the recipes online? The books that I've already read, but still fill up empty shelves?
Shipping anything that's got weight to it is expensive when you start adding up the boxes, so I really want to do it smartly and not waste money.
I am relocating from NY to Florida. I did a lot of research and for me, came up with purge purge purge.
I gave away or donated so much stuff...it was a neat opportunity to reevaluate what is really important to me. I kept mostly sentimental stuff. I went through all my clothes and only took what fit me and I wear regularly (emptied half my closet LOL)
A few objects that are special to make it feel like home and that's that.
Lots of dishware was more of a hassle to pack up securely so I just took special things and will replace them when I get there. We really accumulate so much stuff.
So that is what has worked for me.
AND I got a relocube from AFB...which worked out great.
I've moved many times locally and now in the process of doing my second cross country move..
My advice is get rid of as much as you can. Ship the rest, and accept that until it arrives, no place will feel like home. Pick one picture or nick nack that makes you feel 'at home ' and ship the rest.
But - and this is important - if there is ANY physical possession you own that would break your heart to lose, that is sentimental to the extreme, totally irreplaceable, take it with you. THAT'S the stuff we load in our trunks and backseats. It's like pets and kids - nobody takes better care of them than you do. But very few physical things should hold that level of importance.
I already decided that before the movers get here to pack it all up in a few weeks I am going to take my Rogers and Hammersteins antique volume and put the most precious pictures of my kids out of their frames in there along with our marriage certificate. That's all the sentimental I am allowing myself to haul on the plane to TX. The rest will have to sit in the storage until we find a place to live.
