Default Driving from Las Vegas to Detroit...any tips?

I searched the forum and found a few threads on driving across the country but most of them focused on during the summer.

I will probably be making this trek in January sometime-me and a girlfriend. So, I take it that we should go the southern route, right? This would be I-40, correct?

When I put it into mapquest, it automatically gives me the northern route so I dragged it to I-40 and it does have a blurb on there about how part of that is close in the St. Louis, MO area. Does anyone know anything about this?

Also, just wondering if there is anything else I should know about making that drive that may help us, like good lodging, points of interest, or any other tips.

Thanks!

Made that trip a couple of times and generally haven't hit any problems going the I-15 to I-70 route, but it is just as easy and probably a bit safer bet on good weather to go I-40 to I-44 in the Oklahoma City area, to I-70 in St Louis, to I-75 just to the north of Dayton, OH. That isn't too bad of a drive and the bigger cities are only a pain if you hit them around the usual rush hours. The switch from 44 to 70 is kind of a funky one, but last time I was through there it was well marked. I hit I-40 from Las Vegas by going right down US-93 through Henderson and catching I-40 at Kingman. Don't know if they have the new bridge done going over the Colorado river by Hoover Dam or not, but after the Dam there isn't a whole lot out there before you get to Kingman. Some beautiful country though.

The new bridge is not done yet, we were just there last weekend. Seems they are a little bit behind schedule.

I guess I should find out from someone like AAA to see about the road being closed in St. Louis.

Thanks for your input! I appreciate it!

My tip would be that the weather will very likely be better in Vegas than in Detroit during January...

The closure in St Louis is I-64, basically between I-270 and I-170, you shouldn't have to worry about it. Mapquest puts that up just to alert any drivers who may be going through the St Louis metro.

The locals refer to I-64 by its older name Highway 40, not to be confused with I-40 which runs through Memphis. Highway 40 joins I-70 just west of St. Louis.

Actually, it is my hometown (suburbs, not Detroit city) and I still have a home and 3 older kids there. Transferred for husband's job.
