I attended a local technical college right after high school, it was only 15 minutes from home so why pay $600+ for an apartment? I transferred to state college at 19, the only thing really holding me back was lack of transportation.. I still found it hard to be independent without any savings to fall back on. I finished college, and went straight to work.. Had my own apartment, a nice paying job, and things eventually worked themselves out. The only thing that didn't work out was that I didn't even need to attend college for the job I wanted, and was still in the 6 figure range my first year.. I guess it was a fallback plan..
Moral of the story is anywhere between 18-22 is normal. Earlier than that is impossible, especially as expensive as everything is. Later isn't really unusual, there are a lot of different situations out there.
went into the army at 18 and never went back. we usually visit my mom at her bf's house in the mountains during the winter and we always joke about having to stay an extra 2 weeks because that happened once and they are always afraid of it happening again. they have a well and everytime we are up there it runs out.
I moved out at 17. Moved back in for 2 months just before I shipped out for Basic Training when I was 18. Lease had expired and since I was going to Basic, didn't want to extend it or pay the extra $200/month they charged for not being in a lease.
Married at 19, moved in with in-laws for a year when we moved to OR, until we were able to rent a house. Moved to MN and moved in with step-father for 6 months, when we were 21. We now own our house (are upside down in it) and we are just waiting for the market to even out so we can get rid of the stupid thing and move to TX.
Graduated from HS at 17. Went to Europe for 3 months and turned 18 while I was there. Came home just in time to find a warm, welcoming letter from Uncle Sam in the mail! Havent lived at home since.
Its obvious that 18-19 will take this. That the typical age when kids move away for college. Other then that, or the army, kids tend to stay at home longer which really is a good thing. I love out when i was 24 and i moved straight into my own house. Never had to waste money on rent.
I moved out for the first time at 17. Moved back about 6-7months later, about 4 months pregnant. It was suppossed to be a temporary thing (I was going to rent an apt. --along w/ my ex-- but it wasn't going to be ready for 2wks), but my parents convinced me to stay. I moved back out (for good) when I was 23.
I don't think leaving your parents when they needed you is a good thing. It is good to be independent but do not forget your parents who made you capable of being independent
