According to their website: The 12' and 16' take regular. The 22' and 26' take diesel. The mileage is better on the diesels but I think diesel is still running costlier.
I did the internet and AAA discount. If you are really easy on the trucks as far as revving the engines, you can get very good mileage (better than stated), which saves a lot of money on a long trip. Definitely get a size bigger on the truck that you think you need. The 16' and longer can pull the car trailer.
Does anyone know if Penske puts the speed regulators, governors I believe they're called, in their trucks. I'm not a speed demon by any means, especially towing a vehicle. However, I do not want to be limited to 55 on open highway with a 1500 mile move in front of me. Thanks for the info!
The last two 26' Penske trucks I rented were able to cruse down the road at 65 or 70. Even heavily loaded they didn't lose much speed going through the more hilly regions of Pennsylvania. The last U-Haul I drove through there I wondered if I was going to even make it to the top of some of the hills.
Our Penske did have a governor, maybe around 70? It had plenty of power even though we were overloaded and driving through the mountains. Great experience with Penske. We ended up going 50-55 due to gas mileage as we moved last summer in the height of gas prices, and it was a very low budget move.
Thanks for your replies. I think I am definietly going with Penkse even though I have to go an extra 30 miles to drop off. The people I've spoken with at the local office here have been very polite and helpful. The unlimited miles helps too just in case I have to change my route to avoid nasty winter conditions in the mountains. Thans again everyone

I drove 185 miles one way to pick mine up because they are so much better. They gave me a day or two extra at no cost because I went so far to use them. Worth the extra drive time over using the alternative trucks.
More good news on the Penske front. Just in case I double checked all rates today before making my reservation. While Uhaul has stayed about the same, and Budget has gone up, Penske's rates dropped over $100 in the last few days Long story short...reservation has been made
Check them again just before picking up the truck as well. I did that and the price was lower than my reserved price, I called them up and they gave me the lower rate without a hassle at all.
The governor of 26' Penske trucks is 70 or 75 MPH. That is plenty for a non truck driver driving what is very much a real truck.
I'll second that! We used a 26' truck with a car trailer behind it...I was def. big riggin it! I now have a whole new level of respect for the men and women who do it daily. After 5 days and 1500 miles, I was ready to be done! That could have had something to do with the nine month old sitting next to me the whole way, too!
