Funny, we grew up here in western NY, and now we count the days until we can move down to our Florida home for good.

Where in FLA are you. I have a brother living in Port Charlotte. I grew up in the Buffalo region.

Our retirement home is just south of Leesburg, north of Clairmont, about 30-35 minutes northwest of Orlando.

I have lived in a place that I hated before. This was a very little town in Montana. I did it because I listened to too many people who said I should live there because it was pretty, it was my first job out of college, and I couldn't be picky. The same people then told me to take a job that would have been a $10,000 pay cut (I was making under $25K before) in the town I grew up in. The point I need to make is, don't ever let anyone talk you into moving somewhere you don't want to. People often have a blind loyalty to certain places and do not consider basic 5th grade math when it comes to things like cost of living and wages.

Default moving where you don't want to be

Yes, we moved down to Florida. We moved because of lower housing prices, better weather and to be closer to my relatives that I liked.

The job promised turned out of be a dud, could not pay our mortgage. We are frugal. Plus it was in the school system which we eventually became horrified with.

It turns out I don't even like my relatives. I only knew them from a far and when when we really got to talking, I found they are sort of intolerable. Raciest, judgmental etc I wish it were different because I was very fond of them at one time.

Despite people telling us about the beautiful weather, we had to deal with the hurricanes in 2004 as soon as we moved in. Nobody here was prepared because of lack of storms in a number of years.

MY area we moved into although quiet at first has disintegrated with gangs and crime. An 89 year old woman was raped by a 14,15 and 19 year old teenagers. She lives around the corner from me. We had renters across the street dealing drugs. IT is getting worse now with gang signs on fences and loads of crime.

The people we have come in contact with to employ for home repairs or part of our local gov't or authority figures are so checkered, with shady underhanded criminal dealings. Most come down here to run and hide. Gov't is so corrupt and will eventually kill this state because of it's ineffectiveness and greased palms. Not to mention how we can't even swim in the local gulf beaches due to high bacterial counts from sewer systems draining in there. How the developers have carte blanche to build and build , pave over the wetlands , never mind about the trees. Humm, those future storms will wreak havoc due to this.

However, lots of things did occur because of all of these negative aspects.
The school system is terrible:we pulled our children out, homeschool now and developed a closer relationship to them.

The jobs did not work out: We found a new career path that we actually love.

The storms were manageable: our new career path was honed out of these storms. We got into renewable energy because we lost electricity during those storms.

The government, authority figures, tradesmen etc are all criminal and corrupt: we started doing things for ourselves. We fixed things in our home instead of hiring out. We grew in skills. We wired half our house to be off grid, we did this ourselves. We started tiling our floors, building walls and figuring things out for ourselves. This has been a wonderful/necessary learning experience.

What I am trying to convey is that all places mold and shape us. So, take the good, leave the bad. Florida stinks for me. We are going to move out next year if the real estate market gets better. Our house is worth half of what we paid for it due to 4 foreclosures on our street. We are just waiting for the best time. However, we needed Florida to grow. If we had more positive experiences with people knowing what they were doing and a competent system, we never would have grown ourselves. So, there's a reason, imo, while we get stuck in these places we hate. Face those reasons, figure them out, then move on.

I moved to Atlantic City for 2 months and absolutely hated most of the people that lives there. Most of them work for the casino and it seems that the most important thing to them is the money. This guy i knew asked his "friend" to drive him to walmart about 5 miles away. His "friend" charged him 20 bucks, WTF!!!!!!! That was just one example. I can't believe that city drove me to miss Oakland LOL

I too moved to SC, Columbia, Came up from Florida, I hate it here, it is hotter than Florida, people are not as friendly, the crime is high and my nice neighbor is getting uglier everyday, as the HOA does not force people to take care of their property. The good part about being here is I can go to NC and ride my motorcycle. My next move will be to the mountains of TN or NC

I hear you. We are in San Diego and have looked at houses and if anything that act has reinforced our conviction that we don't belong here. You pay $700K+ for a house with no yard-- the "yard is in fact a cemented-over patio. You have crazy traffic. You have NO natural greenery. You have insane crowds. You have no place for kids to hike/bike. Parts of the area burn down every three or four years. We have been here 3 years and haven't made any real friends because everyone is on their way to someplace else. There is no sense of community because everyone seems to be a transplant. If you raise kids here, they'll spend free time doing what-- lying on the beach and shopping at the mall? No thank you; I want a better life for my children.

I'll trade my all brick house with a three car garage on a quiet street. I'm looking to return there
