It must be nice to have a place to run "home" to.

I was raised overseas, my father was a diplomat. Every two years, we would uproot and move to a new country. Spent a year in VA and then back overseas again.

When we finally came back to the US, we set up residence in VA. Got a job, did okay but something was missing.

Despite all the moving we did, I still had wanderlust. So I up and join the Navy and back overseas I go to the tune of 10 years. Got fed up with the Navy and left, hired by INS and moved to NM. Spent 7.5 years there. Met my now wife there who came out from FL with her now ex. Small town, tongues wagged plus I was getting up in years and working southern border is for the younger crowd. Moved north 1700 miles, me in the UHaul towing her car, she in the diesel P/U with the horse trailor with our three horses. Settled in a house we bought 8 miles from the Canadian border and we both said........................home.

We have never looked back since.

T-130 that sounds like the story of my sisters family. She was in the Air Force and so was her husband. They lived all over the world. Her kids attended so many schools I doubt they could even keep track. they both retired and thought they would settle down. Well they still have'nt. Now he is private working for the military and she still has one child at home. Since retirement they have lived in Las Vegas,South Korea,Spain,Hawaii and now are moving to Michigan. Her older 2 have both joined the military and are now sarting their own saga with moving all over God's green earth. I sure hope they someday they will feel home somewhere.Maybe they will know it when they finally get there.

Yeah, the house we bought was in serious need of renovation but its hard to turn down 2500 sq ft plus a three stall garage and a barn and corral for the horses on 15 acres with a decent shelter belt of trees. We found the place by word of mouth and a handshake sealed the deal.

Now we can't think of living anywhere else and when I say lets go home................ we truly mean it. My wife and I have never been this content in all our lives.

The winters have been a bit of a shock but by and large we enjoy our location. If it gets over 90 during the day now we think its too hot.

I'd say we acclimated quite well.

For sure! Seems like growing up all I wanted to do was chase the stars and move off to a far away land and adopt a totally new life.

I lived the dream for several years, and then slowly I began to realize, small town life isn't so bad, and being near my family and old friends is more valuable than just being somewhere else than I grew up.

I moved back and honestly I think it is the BEST decision I ever made.

I give you props for leaving in the first place, it takes alot of guts to just pack up and move. I would do what everyone else said and weigh out the pros and cons. I personally want to move out of FL but have stayed within 30 miles of where I was born, raised and where my parents live... they are really the only reason I stay here otherwise Id pack up and leave too.

My family had all died off while I was gone so I am haunted by ghosts from the past. I find myself going by places where I lived with them and remembering certain things. This leaves me sad and lonely but I still feel very familiar with everything here and there is security in that. I grew up among the people here and even though I haven't connected with any old friends, I still know how to relate here.
One of the other states I lived in was more open and accepting of differences and the other state was very oppressive. Home is somewhere in the middle and quite comfortable to me. I'm glad I had the experiences I did living elsewhere because it helped me grow and gain independence but I think I made the right decision to come home.
wow,you have some of the same feelings,as to my returning to my roots,i have changed and some of the meanness and sarcasm that is commonplace here, now bothers me(it didn't impact my earlier years),so i am still adjusting, but would go back to sw fla if i could afford it!

I miss some things about my home city, but I think it's best enjoyed as a vacation back home rather than moving back entirely. Too many problems there unfortunately. The only reason to move back is to be closer to family, but I've seen how close family on my mother's side seems to have led to more problems between them, while on my father's side they're physically close in proximity as well, yet they are very far apart and hardly ever see them.
