I am in a similar position to OP. It's like the chicken and the egg, which comes first?
I have also come to the conclusion that I need to find a place where I will feel comfortable living and then look for a job once settled in a home.
My situation is perhaps complicated by the fact I have a home to sell here and the market is dead. 6 months is the time-frame I have fixed for relocation. It is also the time the realter feel reasonable to expect have sold.
I already have zeroed in on the town area I think fits me. I have already traveled there to confirm my research. I even made a few job related contacts. BUT until my home sells, I can only continue researching housing, jobs, social environment from afar.
I'm now trying to think what plan B is if my home doesn't sell within the time-frame, which is a good likelihood.
I have some savings also, but obviously making mortgage payments here and there will be hard to swallow.
Anyway, thanks you all. This site is awesome.

I've been homeless and had a job, and jobless and had a home.
I preferred the former.

I plan on making a move this Spring, relocating myself. I plan on renting a room via Craig's List. A lot of the room rentals are month to month leases which gives you and the landlord much needed flexibility. If things don't work out you can easily bail. If they do work out then when you get income coming in you can look for something more to your liking.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and your suggestions. I'm glad I realized that NJ's too expensive for me to live before I continued my job search in that area. I was just there visiting friends and relatives and saw how crowded it is. Plus, I'm sorry for anyone who lives there, but the people aren't friendly. It could have just been the area I was in, because I'm sure the whole state isn't like that. I wish you the best of luck with your life changes.

I've realized that my topic title has been misleading; what I wanted to know was whether I should look for a job or an apartment ON THE WEB first. I would never consider moving and then looking for a job. Thank you to everyone who has submitted suggestions. Since the topic was misleading, I'm going to discontinue replying. I'm sorry for the confusion.
