I will be driving from Wisconsin to South West Florida. I will be taking a dog and a cat and staying at pet friendly motels for 3 nites. Question is have any of you(pets) ever picked up fleas from staying at these hotel/motels. Do you know if they fumigate the room after a pet stay? If any body knows of any particularly bad places to stay on this route let me know so I can avoid it.
Thanks
Pink

I've traveled all over the country with my dogs & we have never had a problem with fleas. Do you have your pets on preventitive (i.e. Frontline)? If so, it shouldn't be a problem. I usually go with Ramada or Holiday Inn Express for a place to stay as most of them do accept multiple pets I also have always planned out where to stop in advance. It just makes it easier than trying to find a hotel that accepts pets when I'm tired and the fur-kids are hungry. Good website to check out hotels is www.tripadvisor.com You can find out whether other travelers have had problems. Hope that this helps!
I have worked in various motels/hotels in 2 different states and my mom and grandmother in 4 different states, and I can tell you that none of them that allowed pets fumigated the rooms for fleas or ticks. So there is a good chance that the motels/hotels that you are looking at staying do not fumigate as well. I wouldn't think it would be a safe idea to put a person in a room recently fumigated, so that room would go unrented for a night or two, which would be money lost for the motel/hotel. Besides the maids already have a ton of other work to do without having to take the extra time to fumigate.
Your best bet if you are concerned about your animals picking up hitchhikers is to use some sort of preventative as suggested by previous poster. This way you can be absolutley sure that your pets are safegaurded against fleas and ticks.
Thanks for the link VA-CAT I will check it out. I only use the flea prevention when there is a problem with fleas because it irritates my Golden's skin, she always tries to scratch or bite at the spots..Also I worry the cat will get too close and lick at it, not good.

What about using a flea collar? would that irritate your dog? You could use it only while you are in the rooms and then remove it when you are not. Then once you get to your final destination you could give them a flea bath before taking them inside and fumigate your car, just in case.
I never had a problem. Motel certainly spray as they under go inspection quite often . As to picking up anyhting ;it looks like bed bugs are the rise more than anything else in motel and hotals.
