Best way back to California
I am driving back to California from New York State between late September and early December of this year "09". When we drove to New York last year(in early October)we took "80" the whole way. We stopped at several places along the way and tried to make our trip educational/fun for the kids. (I drove with my best friend and my 3 kids. My husband drove seperately with his friend and beat us by about a day.) I really do not want to drive the same way back . I would like to see something newbut I am also really concerned about the weather . Unfortunatley I have no final say in the exact time we move but I do have control over the route we take.Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Looks like you're pretty much stuck with I-80, unless you want to go WAY out of the way or take some of the scenic off-routes along or near I-80, such as US-50 or down the Feather River Canyon through the Sierras. Of course, I wouldn't recommend doing that in the winter. Heck, Donner Pass on the interstate is bad enough!
Any other route will add a huge amount of miles to your trip.

My only comment would be to shoot for September rather than December, keep an eye on the weather, at some point it might make sense to detour down to I-40 (yes I know this adds a lot of miles to the trip but if 80 is snowed over in the middle of Wyoming, I'm thinking Rock Springs, -40, snow, 3 in the morning...)

I would love to move earlier but the house we own is being rented and the lease is up in December. I have talked to the Rental agent we have managing the property and asked if the tenent would be willing to leave earlier(she knows we want the house back at the end of the term lease). Now it is all up to her. We can leave here at any time. The thought of leaving in December is not a pleasant one but our whole experience back east has been full of nighmarish fun so this just seems to be par for the course.

Not that it's much of a difference in your total route, but U.S. 30 in WY is a good alternate to I-80 when the weather gets bad.
