Default Moving from Canada to the states...

Hey all, I am currently dating a guy from Canada. I plan to go visit Canada in October and possibly moving there for 6 months. My boyfriend and I are wanting him to be living here in the states by next year at this time. But I am not sure how it works. I have been looking online at the websites and it's really confusing stuff. We both want him to live here for good and work here, which he can apply for a work visa but my question is, can he live with here with me for good or does he have to keep going back to Canada and then re-entering back to the states until he can become a citizen?

Look at Department of State - Websites of US Embassies, Consulates, & Diplomatic Missions

First step would be for him - not you - to contact the US consulate nearest his Canadian home to find out what's required. Homeland Security makes changes to the border rules and immigration rules almost daily.

Without a work visa he can only be in the US for six months less a day in any 12 month period. He will be unable to work, or earn any money, or go to school.

I looked through a really helpful website about Canadians moving to the US. There's still two things that I am not quite sure about. He would like to come a permanent resident which means he would have to apply for a green card. He can live here with that and have a worker's permit from what I understand. It said that he would have to have an employer and was wondering if that mean an employer in the states or in Canada?

Also, how long does it usually take to get a worker's permit and a green card, the website didn't say.
