Hey everybody,
I'm doing a corporate relo from Los Angeles to Denver. Like many companies, my company has set a limit on reimbursable relocation expenses. I obviously do not want to go over this limit, or else I'm paying out of my own pocket.
So far, we are about $1,000 under this limit. I'm including the following costs: 1) Movers to pack and ship us; 2) Shipment of two vehicles; and 3) Airfare for my wife and myself.
What else am I missing? Utility shut-off and turn-on...is that expensable? Anything else? I'm trying to determine if I need to cut corners in certain areas in order to come in under the "limit" or whether my $1,000 buffer is good enough. Thanks!
You'd have to ask that particular company whether or not utility turn off/on costs were expensable. Don't forget meals and any nights in a hotel. A rental car until your stuff is delivered (or after it is loaded up) or whatever else you might be using for transportation. Also ask if the cost of re-registering your vehicles and getting new DLs would be considered expensable, or gym membership cancellation/transfer fees.
Costs to cover deposits/turn off utilities are usually not covered by companies for relocation unless it states so on your offer letter. Reason being you nor the company can claim the money back as moving expenses from the IRS come tax time.
What about a trip to check out the area and to scout homes?
Be sure to track your mileage for everything moving related and submit that as well. You should also submit a rental car on both ends of the move if needed, as well as miscellaneous expenses like a cab ride to the airport.
What about a place to stay until your stuff finally gets to you or the price of items to live with until you things get to you? We did a cross country move and for a week we had to sleep on air matresses and buy towels and blankets.
