Shipping Computer & Monitors across the Country
I need to ship my computer equipment from NYC to San Diego.
I'm guesstimating that my computer weighs around 50 pounds, with each of my 3 monitors weighing about 20-35 pounds.
So to ballpark it I need to ship ~130lbs of sensitive computer equipment that's worth around $2k.
I don't need it to get there fast (I can make do with my laptop in the meantime), but I need to make sure that nothing gets damaged.
What are my options here?
Is FedEx or UPS trustworthy?
Should I find a specialized shipper that deals with IT equipment?
Give up and assume all will be lost?

What you need to do is put as mich as you can in boxes with peanuts and pack it intside another box filled with peanuts. And insure it for max value. It may cost you $500 shipping, but it will be worth every penny. Or have it professionally packed by something like U-Mail It. I've had very good luck with it both ways. My G4 weighed 53 pounds shipped. It was not something I wanted to replace very soon. All pieces need to be as secured as possible. The exterior boxes will take the punishment and your computer and monitors should not be damaged.
Any one who believes Fed-Ex or any The other shipper handles packages with tender loving care is living in another world. High value insurance cuts down on careless handling. Keep your receipts with you. Fed-Ex won't pay off without them.
On the other hand, if you are driving, take them with you. All you need are seat belts and pillows. I've done that cross country a number of times. Place the monitor screens on the seat or toward the back and buckle them in. The computer can ride on the floor or on its side - as long as there are no loose parts inside.
I've been moving electronics for 17 years without a problem. .

The UPS Store has a guarantee that if they pack it and ship it via UPS, it will arrive safely and not damaged. I'd suggest going that route.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Looks like I'll go either with FedEx or UPS, and have them package it and insure it. A few questions about the process..
Can I insure the items for more than they're worth?
If one item gets damaged, but the others are okay - How do they determine the cost of that item, or do they reimburse me for the entire package?
Has anyone shipped LCD's via FedEx or UPS? If I let them package it, will they do a good job covering the screens so they aren't scratched?

Take the hardrive(s) out and carry them personally, they are quite small and will just about fit in the palm of your hand. If the computers somehow get lost, stolen or severely damaged you'll only lose some hardware.
