I'm moving in 2 months from DC to NYC. The thing is I will be first moving into a temp place in NYC while I look for a perm place so I'm trying to figure the best way to move my stuff from DC. I just have a small studio, but still that's a couch, big TV, queen bed, coffee table, etc. My plan is to get a storage space in NYC and move everything there while I'm in the temp place. One issue though is I'm NOT storing my plasma TV in a storage space so I have to take that elsewhere (to my folks house in another part of the country) which is going to be a hassle.

Does anyone have any ideas of a better way to do this? I feel like unloading in a storage space only to have to reload a few weeks later and move in is not the best way, plus the annoying TV issue.

I suggest using ABF relo cubes. It sounds like you can get it all in one relo cube. You pack it and lock it. They will keep the relo cube until you are ready for it. I think you have 30 days initially and must pay for storage, (minimal charge), for more time. I am not sure what your concern about the tv is but I have moved a 48" lcd tv a few times in relo cubes without incident. I think Budget and Uhaul now have tv packers for large tvs. While you are in transit you could rent any furniture, tv, or other things you might need. Or try to find an extended stay hotel in the NYC area. (I'm not sure if they are in NYC).
Good luck
Don

Default storage at movers

Some movers offer temporary storage. You might want to check with your moving company to see if they can hold your goods for several months until you have a final address. Usually the cost is the same as if you would personally rent storage. The advantage is that the furniture would be wrapped and protected by the movers the whole time it is in storage. If you can find a reputable mover, it is a good option with less heavy lifting for you.

I have used storage units for awhile. Some offer good short term rates just be careful if you extend cause sometimes it goes up a lot. When I moved from one state to another I had my car shipped and only what I could fit in there did I take. The rest I sold and bought new as it was cheaper then having it moved. I had really cheap stuff though. Not sure if it would be the same for you. Good luck in your move
