Hello - I will be moving to Georgia from Massachusetts at the end of November, in a 16' moving trucking towing a car. Normally in a car, I would just go the most direct route. But since I am not totally comfortable with the truck towing a car, I would be happy to travel a longer route instead of the most direct route if it means I am able to avoid stressful traffic situations. In particular I'm interested in avoiding NYC and the GW Bridge. Google gives me two options, 95 being the most direct, and the second option 81 is 2 hours longer, which would be no big deal if it is a more pleasant drive. However that route still takes me over the GW Bridge. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What part of Georgia are you going to? From Boston to Atlanta, I always do I-84 to I-684 and cross the Tappan Zee Bridge to I-287 to I-78 to I-81 south. I usually then cut over to I-85 south to GA by way of I-77 in VA.

Ok great. The second route Google shows does use 81 S but your route through NY sounds better. I am moving to Savannah so the route would be similar until North Carolina. Thanks for the help!

I'd avoid Washington DC traffic also (particularly during daylight, holidays, weekends) so I guess that does it for I-95 being an option.

While NY and DC traffic can be awful (don't forget Baltimore) any other route is just so far out of the way that it's usually not worth the effort and extra expense.

Unless there's a wreck or some kind of backup on the GW, you'll get through the Bronx OK. It just may take some time. Don't let the tunnel portion scare you; the lanes in there are just as wide as they are outside. The same will be true in Baltimore whether you stay on 95 through the Ft. McHenry Tunnel or take I-695 through the Harbor Tunnel. It's just a matter of perception because of the walls and ceilings.

Trying to avoid either city by taking the outer bands adds a substantial number of miles and will take more time under the best of conditions. And, in DC, the 95/Beltway is 5 or 6 lanes wide, so just stay to the right and puddle-duck along at the speed you find comfortable.

You can do it and save a number of bucks as well. And besides, the view down Manhattan from the GW Bridge is worth the price of the toll!

I have made the drive from NYC and Baltimore and DC back and forth to GA several times.

You can't avoid the megalopolis without going so far out of the way that it takes longer than if you just trudged right up 95.

The potential for backups starts around Richmond and runs pretty much all the way up the coast from there. After NYC, I'm not sure. I'm guessing by that time you'll be too tired to care.

Not sure where you are coming from in MA. We are snowbirds and avoid 95 as much as possible. We are in upstate NY. We take 87S > 84 >81>77>26 >95

It will depend what part of Georgia are you leaving from? and where are you going to in MA. I've driven from Asheville NC to Attleboro MA or Boston MA several times. Depends if you are near Atlanta or the GA coast.
