Quit job, told only immediate family where I was going, packed up my old Honda Civic, closed bank account (not that there was much in it) and moved from New Jersey to Tennessee all by myself. I was scared to death and very excited. The best thing I have ever done! Life is short so LIVE it!

Well in 48 days we will be packing up our car, shipping a few boxes and moving to Oklahoma City Oklahoma. We have done quite a lot of research but have never been there even to visit. We also have no family or friends there and that is fine with us.

I am preparing to move from Pittsburgh, PA to the Tampa, Fl area, with my 17 yr old son. Neither of us can wait. Hopefully I'll have about 20k to do it on.
We are scaling back big time. we are loading up our stuff from a 4 br house and moving in 2 Uhaul trailers behind our trucks.

We cant wait! Life is gonna be so much nicer down there

Well we are moving from Florida to Oklahoma and I can tell you that Florida is not always all that it is made out to be.Homeowners insurance is high, property taxes are highand the wages are low. Crime in cities here is high (especially Tampa). Florida is also not well known for having good schools either.

On the other hand though your taxes should be lower overall, you will not be too far from a beach and the driving will be easier to do without snow.

I grew up overseas, as a US Citizen. When I was 18 and finished with school, I moved to the US alone. I went strait to college in Seattle. It was overwhelming to me! I was a US Citizen but was so unfamiliar with American ways because I had rarely even been to the US.

I lived on the west Coast for 21 years. It is now what I consider "home."

DH wanted a change and took a job in NC 3 years ago. I still dream of going back HOME to the West Coast.

Immediately after graduating university, I packed everything I could into a carry-on and two checked bags and moved to South Korea to teach. Didn't know anyone there, couldn't speak the language, and didn't have enough money to get back if anything went wrong (IMF bailout and economy crash happened within months). Lived there nearly 10 years. Came back, lived in Tulsa for 10 months and then up and moved to Iowa City to be with my boyfriend. People I knew kept telling me, "But, you won't know anyone except your boyfriend and it's a whole new city/state." I kept answering, "It's IOWA, not the Hermit Kingdom!"

I am going through the same thing you are going through. I am leaving everything I've known to move to NC just for a change and warmth. Why are you doing it?

I've been very seriously considering doing just this, moving away from everything I've ever known. Sadly, most of my relatives are either dying, dead, or indifferent. The live indifferent relatives don't even send me Christmas cards, so I've stopped sending them.

I have to admit that I'm scared to do this. My biggest concern is the job market. Can someone in their early 50's find work in this economy? Most of my job experience is customer service related, mainly banking, but some telecom. I never seem to have gotten a break job wise, always in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What I'm looking for area wise is one that I can obviously find a job that will adequately support me, has reasonable taxes-including property taxes, and very importantly--has a lot less snow, and a lot more sunshine than here in Upstate New York.

Any thoughts???
