Hello,
We will be moving from NYC to Texas in July. Can anyone please recommend a good and reasonable long distance movers? And also an estimate on how much would it cost to move a 2 bedroom apartment?
Hi Mike. Having had both the experiences of renting moving trucks and having moving companies move me, I am fairly sure that doing it yourself would be considerably less costly. Right now though, I hear rental trucks to Texas are quite expensive due to so many people coming to the State.
Sorry that I can't help on the specific costs since it's been 15 years since I moved from the mid-Atlantic to New Mexico/Texas but here's one native Texan wishing you the best of luck and safety in your move. Welcome to Texas.
Moved from NYC to Texas from a 1 bed apartment. We rented a budget truck and moved all our belongings ourself. I think in total it cost us $2349.00 estimate that is not including gas and tolls or stops. Tack on about another $1000 to that.... If you get to the Carolinas the first day and stay over night there, you can probably reach your final destination late the following day...
You're planning your relocation during the middle of the peak moving season so finding company that is both 'good' and 'reasonable' may be a challenge. This year the industry is at capacity since so many drivers have left the business because of the down economy. Even rental trucks are being leased at a premium so it's better to plan early.
Moving interstate is expensive. Most full service household goods carriers calculate their charges based on weight moved and distance traveled. Get at least three in-home estimates from reputable movers with bricks-and-mortar businesses close to your home. Whatever you do, avoid internet brokers. There are plenty of good movers in NYC, but, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), that area is also overflowing with a bunch of unscrupulous rogue carriers.
You can check a carrier's credentials at the FMCSA's Protect Your Move.gov website at Protect Your Move. While there be sure to read Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move in the left sidebar.
When we moved from TX to VA we rented a truck (no movers) from Penske. We also hired some guys from a "two guys and a truck" type moving company to load our rented truck for us. We drove to VA in our rented truck. When we arrived in VA we had a similar company to unload for us. You'd also want to factor in the cost of towing a car and spending a night on the road somewhere if you choose that kind of option.
As far as long distance movers I don't have a specific recommendation but you can get some good information on the Moving Scam website. The site offers tips and reviews of various companies. It may not tell you who to hire but it definitely can tell you who NOT to hire. The Mover Reviews website might help, too.
Thank You all for the replies! Really appreciate it.
