maryland's cool. i like the inner harbor, and the cities right around DC, they are beautiful! i've been to ocean city and while we had a good time, i can get the same experience about 2 hours closer to me (wildwood, nj). i haven't explored other parts of the state however.

nj seems to get the same bad rap (probably tenfold!), so i know how you feel, lol.

LOL..You really got beat up on your simple question didn't you? Oh well....Although I never lived in Maryland, my uncle lives in Hagerstown and I actually do like it when I visit him. The region he lives in is interesting because you can be in PA, WV, and VA all within a matter of minutes. Also, you are close to the major cities of the Northeast. Extreme Western Maryland is very rural, but not too far from Pittsburgh or Morgantown.

I have no love for Maryland and we're looking to move away from it. It is however a beautiful state with a little bit of everything. But the TAXES are a killer, the state keeps raising every tax and fee. The traffic is just awful, you will lose 20% of your life waiting in traffic. There are rude as well as nice people, crime is not so good but reporting things to the police is worse. No response, for every time we contacted the police. High high prices, you will pay more for everything here, houses, cars, insurance, fees, food.

Fair enough but the problems you describe can be found in many other states, not just Maryland. Maryland and Virginia are in the thick of it to be sure, because of the Washington DC job market. Most states have their own problems. Some are worse, look at California and Nevada for instance.

I'm a native of Maryland and presently live in Silver Spring, just north of DC. There's a lot to like about this part of Maryland. Silver Spring is a diverse area and has a nice downtown, parks, malls, residential areas and easy metrorail access to DC. Many other good suburbs line both Maryland and Virginia across the Potomac. Another benefit is that Baltimore is close by.

I agree that you need to have a high household income to enjoy living here, mainly because the homes are expensive. However, the DC area also has a strong job market. There are so many reasons I enjoy living here and would not easily consider moving away.

My only time in Maryland was at a picnic near Gaithersburg I think. I thought it looked pretty and I got along well with this kid from the state. Still I don't know that a picnic in the countryside near a suburb gives me much of an impression of a state.

I'm from Maryland and I hate it. Baltimore is a disgusting pit for the most part and the DC area is congested and unbelievably economically segregated. I'm trying to get out of the state but I don't have $ to move. DC just sucks in general, you have either type A arrogant obnoxious people, annoying hipsters or hoodrats with no real inbetween of normal people. O'Malley and the legislature are running the state into the ground as well. It is somewhat fortunate for Marylanders that however incompetently theyre governed they can have jobs in Virginia.

I like Maryland. Particularly the Eastern Shore. When I lived in Florida, and had to go to NYC, I would drive over the Bay B-T and up the Eastern Shore rather than I-95.

LOVE them crabcakes.
