With the large amount of "southern" threads, I was just wondering how familiar people actually are with the region. The question is was states (multiple choice) are you familiar with and not just been to.

I am not sure how you want to define this

I lived for 3 years in Jax, Florida. During that period I took day trips or weekend trips to Lake City, Ocala, Daytona, Orlando, Space Coast, Tampa, Gainesville, West Palm, and Miami. Never made it to the panhandle, the keys, or the interior way down south.

I have lived for 18 years in Northern Virginia. I have been to Richmond a couple of times, to Charlottesville a couple of times, to Hampton Roads a couple of times, to the lower northern neck once, to the area between fredericksburg and richmond a couple of times, to near SW vir a couple of times, etc. And to chincoteague many times. Never spent any time in the rural southside, or far southwest.

I lived for several weeks in north dallas on an assignment, and spent a weekend in San Antonio - does that mean I know Texas?

I have been to North carolina a few times, once each to great smokies, the outer banks, and to Greensboro.

I spent a weekend in Charleston SC, and a couple of days criss crossing the state of SC on a business (RR) project.

I have spent three weekends in Georgia, one each in Atlanta, Savannah, and SW Georgia, as well as day trips from Jax to the sea islands and the okeefenokee swamp. Also while in Jax i met LOTS of people from Georgia.

Hmm.. good point.
By familiar I mean that you have a general knowledge of the state and it's different regions and/or cultures. After reading so many of these southern-style threads, I started to wonder.

So if I'm familiar with just one city or area of a state I can answer in the positive? For instance I lived in Houston for several years, but don't know jack about anything in west Texas, do I still get to say I'm familiar with Texas?

I know about the general cultures of Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee and Georgia. Mainly because I read so much about them and talked to people from those places.

But it will be a firsthand experience in 10 days.

I am most familiar with Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida (esp. the panhandle), and Tennessee. I have been to Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia; however, I haven't spent any good tourist time in the last four states; it's been all work, so I didn't get to do any exploring.
