My family and I are looking to relocate to a warmer area from central NJ. We looked at Florida but it did not feel like the right fit. We are considering areas around Charleston SC as well as Arizona and California. We are a husband, wife, son age 11, daughter age 9 and a Bernese Mountain Dog. We are seaching for an area with a home town feel (we currently live in Princeton) with access to cultural activities. We homeschool our children, who are fluent in French, and both very active athletically (basketball, soccer, ballet). They also enjoy art classes and music lessons. We are not religious and would not fit into a heavily religious community. We would like our maximum housing price to be about 1m. My husband and I lived in the Bay area during graduate school and loved it. We have some family in Southern California and friends in the Bay Area. My concern about California is the cost of living/housing and distance from the east coast. (My brother and his family are in NJ as well as my Mom). Arizona seems nice, but I have read some posts here that concern me about that area. Charleston's newer communities such as Daniel Island, James Island seem very promising. I would appreciate any feedback/advice as we continue to struggle with this decision. PS we also require high quality medical care. Our son has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. Thank you.

In Charleston, Daniel Island is somewhat newer. James Island is not. For 1 million, you could find a beautiful home in Charleston. You could also get a (relatively) lower-end place on the water, I think. I'm not sure.

First though, you'd better decide between the south, or the west. You're talking Bay Area, California, Jersey, Arizona.. even with a city like Charleston, I think the deep south would be a major adjustment. Good luck.

I would go with California, without a doubt. It just seems to be a better match in all that you're looking for than Arizona or South Carolina. While housing is expensive in the Bay Area, with a budget of $1 million, you could definitely afford a perfectly decent home in a good neighborhood with good schools. As far as the distance factor, in my personal experience, it's more psychological than anything. It seems that once people get beyond around an 8 hour radius of their family and friends, they see them just as much whether they're 8 hours away or whether they're 80 hours away; usually on holidays, vacations or other special events. So you have to truly ask yourself how much more often you'd really see your family if you lived in South Carolina as opposed to California.
