When I grew up in NY we used to drive a bit out to the Island and go to Drive Ins. I loved going there and really miss them, now that is it summer. I imagine there must be some that still exist across the country. Where are they hiding?

There is a few hanging on in the rest of the country. Here in NJ, there is one somewhere in the southern part of the state. I believe it is in Vineland. However, in your home state of NY, I do know there is one in Warwick that is still in operation. Here is the website for that theater...Welcome to the Warwick Drive-In Theater (http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1006131/driveinmovie/ - broken link)

As for the statistics, they back up your claim that not many are still around. In their heyday in the late 1950's and early 1960's, around 4,000 operated around the country according to wikipedia. According to another article BBC NEWS | Americas | Drive-in theatres refuse to fade away, this one from the BBC, there are less than 500 still in existance. However, the BBC article is optimistic that at least some will be around for some time to come.

Finally, if you want exact statistics and really want to know where all of the remaining theaters are...check out this website...U.D.I.T.O.A. It is the Drive-in Theaters Owners Association. At the Members section would be the tool for locating the nearest theater to your location.

Cheers!

There are several newer ones here in Texas. One just south of Dallas & one here in Tyler. They're quite popular.

There's one here in Lubbock that opened about ten hears ago, and it's quite popular as well. I just went to it last week, and it's only $6 for two movies.

There is a Drive-In Theatre a couple of miles down the road from my parents' home in Norwalk, Ohio. That theatre is a big hit in the summertime; they always show newly-released movies.

I just came back from Seaside Heights and they were playing a movie on the beach at dusk. (not sure if that qualifies), but it was nice. They don't do it every day, but a few times a week.

Just look for "Movies on the beach"
