This much I know for sure - nothing in Texas along and east of I-35 is even remotely western.

Dallas down to Austin and points east (Houston) are firmly southern.

San Antonio you could make a case for being the starting point of the "southwest" or its just southern.

The southwest starts for the most part west of those lines of cities.

Minnesotans like to travel (as demonstrated by their large airport in MSP) but "home is where their heart is" even in view of all the cop-shootings and crime now there. Garrison Keillor in a PBS documentary on MN years ago is famed to say: "If you come to Minnesota the first time you'll find that it is just to good." LOL...not any more.
I have met quite a few Minnesotans at my current location. I haven't heard the name mentioned as much. North Dakota doesn't seem so bad in that regard but Iowa is the worst example I've heard of with that.

Truth be told, the ignorance can go both ways. Many Nebraskans have little idea of what Iowa is like outside of Council Bluffs (a blue-collar suburb of Omaha), and assume the rest of the state is just like it.
I don't think hypocrisy is the the word you're looking for here. Having not lived in Nebraska and having no family around there I had no idea.

In Texas people will say "The West" starts at The Pecos River. In Austin, it starts at I-35 going westward towards The Texas Hill Country.

In general Texas can't be labeled as one region as it has multiple.

The key to "W's" "other country" is it's size. That said, Rand McNally (maps) considers Texas one of the 4 Southwestern states along with OK, NM, and AZ.

US 83 is a better divider.

In Texas, that goes through Childress, Abilene, Junction, Uvalde and Laredo
