wow, I don't think I've actually been inside a mall in at least 2 years. Been by Costco many times, but I don't even really know what they sell.

Don't use either...

I don't even know if we have a Costco in Kansas City... and malls are dead... there are 2 major nice malls left, they are in the suburbs.

Most of KC uses the outdoor mixed used business/residential shopping districts...

In defense of Costco, they have some of the most beautiful and reasonably priced organic produce imaginable. Fantastic bakery, excellent meats & seafood, huge selection of olive oils, coffees, etc. Some unique frozen things I don't see in the mainline supermarkets, etc.

They pay their employees well, have buyers with a very keen eye, etc. - yet they still outdo everyone else (around here, anyway) price-wise. I have no problems admitting that I am a BIG fan.

We have an outlet mall near me and I think I can't live without it. I don't know why but malls feel important to me. I only shop there two-three times a year, but I think for younger people like myself wearing nice clothes and looking like everyone else is an important thing. Our outlet mall doesn't have a food court or movie theater, so you can't hang out there. It does have alot of stores for many different types of groups of younger people-jocks, hipsters, surfers, skaters, etc...

I do find the counter argument to malls interesting and understandable though. Most strip malls and fashion-oriented malls are bad for communities as malls suck business out of downtowns and strip malls are bad for local small businesses.

Malls also generate traffic. I think enclosed malls are shutting down, but I know there are alot of open-air malls and outlet malls are thriving. The outlet mall near where I live is thriving and the two malls in Santa Barbara, CA are doing good.

There are about 1,369 enclosed malls (some of these may be open-air malls), 406 town center malls, and 380 outlet malls. I would say most counties have at least one type of mall as of April 2009.

There are 602 Sam's Clubs, 563 Costcos, and 206 BJ's Wholesales as of 2009.

No mall for about 8 Counties around me. Not that I give a rip, I hate Malls.

There are 3086 Counties in the US, I know of several Counties that have all three types of malls you list. I would suspect that, at best, about 1/2 the Counties in the US have some sort of Mall, not most of them.

No Cosco's around here, so I would have to vote for a mall.

And what would the stats for the wholesale clubs and Costcos be?

Don't know; Don't even care. You seem to be the one with a shopping obsession.
