and fact of the matter is that canada is not as racially/ethnically diverse as the US is, and it never has been. canada is 84 percent non-hispanic white, the US is 66 percent (ration of 2:1 in US compared to a little over 5:1 in canada).

canada was historically an almost all white country. only very recently in a more racially progressive time period has canada started to gain minority population due to immigration influx. just as far back as 1986 canada was 90 percent white.

so canada may supposedly "respect ethnic diversity" but they really dont have too much of it compared to the US, and what of it they do have theyve only gotten very recently in their history.

and anybody who thinks that canadians respected native americans knows nothing of that countries history. who the hell do you think lived in toronto before all the british settlers got there? native canadians were darn near wiped out just like native americans. only in far northern canada were they somewhat left alone as the land they held was undesirable. although the canadian government still went through a period in the 1940's to 60's where they forced christianity and other western values on the inuits that had pretty much been left alone up to that point in an attempt to solve the "eskimo problem"

point is canada needs to get up off their high horse. its not some perfect progressive paradise where everybody gets along, holds hands and sings kumbaya all day
Don't get that misconstrued. Toronto has a alot of immigrants from all over the world. So, eventhough it is 52% White, there is plenty of diversity within that 52%. Trust me when I say that Toronto's diversity can be put up against any city in the US due to having diversity within the diversity there and in the other major Canadian cities.

because all white americans come from england right...? the vast majority of toronto's immigrants are not white. the diversity in that 52 percent is not different from us cities, or not much. canada is much whiter than the US and that white population is no more ethnically diverse, its probably less so.
32 percent of canadians marked "canadian" as their ancestry, followed by by english at 21 percent and french at 19 percent. 7 percent of americans marked "american" as their ancestry. the largest ancestry in the US was german at 17 percent, nearly half of canada's largest white ancestry.

so not only is canada much whiter, its white population is less ethnically diverse.

the us is significantly more ethnically diverse than canada as a whole, and many us cities are more diverse than toronto (many of which the largest racial/ethnic group is somewhere in the 30 to 40 percent range and there are quite a few US cities that fit this. not true of canada)

arguing that canada is more ethnically diverse than the united states is ludicrous

Nobody is arguing that Canada is more diverse than the US. But there's no questioning that Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world, with a huge range of different ethnic groups being represented. Some data. Even though there is a slight white majority, that majority encompasses pretty much every European nationality you can think of.

It seems most Americans idea of "diverse" is lots of hispanics and blacks. A city can be 75% black, and people will call it diverse.

actually it pretty much does. perhaps not exclusively but pretty damn close to to it.

"canadian" is what you check when your family has been in canada for many many generations. and the percent of canadians that applies to that are white is in the very, very high 90's

Are you Canadian? Well I am, a non-white Canadian to be exact. the 2001 census ( the data where you got you're info from), was of the first times a person could of one self-declare any Ethnicity they wanted, and if I could remember you could of list up to 5 (may be more). A lot of people misinterpreted the question and just wrote their Nationality and not their ancestry.
