Which one of these two Southern medium-sized coastal cities do you prefer ... Savannah, GA or Charleston, SC? Both have a lot to do with many historical places. In all aspects, which is the best?

Charleston for me. SVA just seems on the decline in a lot of areas, not a whole lot happening there. There are some GORGEOUS historic homes there as well as Charleston. From my experience, Charleston seems more upscale, cleaner, and generally 'happier.' Both are worth a visit however and have different things to offer.

For me, I'd have to go with Charleston. We visit there often and love the area.

I would say Savannah. Charleston has been "discovered" more to a certain degree and its southern charm is being replaced by America-at-large urbanity. Savannah still seems to be a sleepy southern town. Maybe it's fair to say Savannah is Charleston 20 years ago.

I've been to both cities many times. Worked around Charleston for awhile in the late 90s and got to know it pretty well. I really liked Mt. Pleasant, just across the river from Charleston, and it's close proximity to the clean white sand beach at Isle of Palms. Seems like lots of other folks like it too, the traffic along the main highway 17 was pretty bad at times.
