And remember even without a car there are still transit costs, yes no gas, car payment, insurance, but subway, bus, train, cab fares
Honestly many people in these types of environments elect to not have a car as much because it can be more of a pain and few opportunities to use them.

Would really depend how far they are in towards Manhattan in Brooklyn... I am sure there are certain neighborhoods there where a car at least for part time use might prove beneficial esp if you are leaving the city at a certain rate vs renting car, if mixed in with public transit. I know it works this way in Chicago as well, the further you are towards the loop the more of a headache it is to have a car, parking harder, traffic worse, and obviously longer to get out of the city b/c you are dead center.
It really depends which city you would prefer, and what your job is.
An unlimited monthly metrocard in NYC only costs about $75. It's very cheap.
You cannot go by that cost of living calculator. There are very expensive areas in Brooklyn, then there are average priced areas. Big difference between Park Slope and Brownsville, for example. There are reasonably priced neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Also, Brooklyn is much cheaper than Manhattan.
There are also some limited transit options in Dallas and Houston. You may be able to get a lower priced apartment in one of those cities and do without a car, renting one once a month when you absolutely need it.

I'd love to live in NYC........but the pressure of having to earn a much higher income is what prevents me from making the move.
I know with a job and my side projects online I can clear $70-$80k a year.
I don't have children nor do I plan on having any.
I could live on that income much easier in one of the southern cites more so than in NYC. As I increase my income I can save and invest more and maybe one day buy a loft or home.
Not to mention, I somewhat miss owning a car to be honest. Public transport is cool but I do miss washing my car and just going for nice Sunday drives.
I think my selection of housing may be better as well. NYC was always my ultimate destination but I can compromise. I am not sure If I want to spend $1800 for rent in NYC.
I am sure there are lots of nice areas in Dallas and Houston that are away from the riff/raff.
Also look at Philly, by far the cheapest City in the NE, very easy without a car, many downtown neighborhoods to choose, In some ways Philadelphia is probably the closest on feel to NYC living (outside of NYC) and at a much more reasonable price. And btw NY is only an hour by train to get that NYC fix...
Yes, look for a city with train service to NYC so you can visit frequently. Philly sounds like a good choice, you'll have the urban atmosphere without the high $.
