I was just thinking about this recently, and I'd love to hear all the different state songs, so I thought it'd be nice if we could get all of em in here so everyone could listen to all the different ones we have. Just give us you state, your song or songs, and a link.

I'll start with Connecticut.
Our state song is Yankee Doodle. It was adopted in 1978.

Dear goshhh, I searched "Illinois state song" in YouTube... and they were for the school... so I just gave up after that.

More people should be taking part of this thread!

Anyways here are the lyrics though:
By thy rivers gently flowing, Illinois, Illinois,O'er thy prairies verdant growing, Illinois, Illinois,Comes an echo on the breeze.Rustling through the leafy trees, and its mellow tones are these, Illinois, Illinois,And its mellow tones are these, Illinois.

From a wilderness of prairies, Illinois, Illinois,Straight thy way and never varies, Illinois, Illinois,Till upon the inland sea,Stands thy great commercial tree, turning all the world to thee, Illinois, Illinois,Turning all the world to thee, Illinois.

When you heard your country calling, Illinois, Illinois,Where the shot and shell were falling, Illinois, Illinois,When the Southern host withdrew,Pitting Gray against the Blue, there were none more brave than you, Illinois, Illinois,There were none more brave than you, Illinois.

Not without thy wondrous story, Illinois, Illinois,Can be writ the nation's glory, Illinois, Illinois,On the record of thy years,Abraham Lincoln's name appears, Grant and Logan, and our tears, Illinois, Illinois,Grant and Logan, and our tears, Illinois.

Here's the one for Texas:

Texas, Our Texas" Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty State!
Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful so great!
Boldest and grandest, withstanding ev'ry test
O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.
(chorus)
Texas, O Texas! your freeborn single star,
Sends out its radiance to nations near and far,
Emblem of Freedom! it set our hearts aglow,
With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo.
(chorus)
Texas, dear Texas! from tyrant grip now free,
Shines forth in splendor, your star of destiny!
Mother of heroes, we come your children true,
Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.
Chorus
God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.
God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.

Our official state song is from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical about Oklahoma. Every Oklahoman has experienced showing their ID in another state to have the state spelled out in song as someone is reminded of the musical... "O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A, Oklahoooooma, O.K.!"

"Oooooklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain,
And the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain.
Oklahoma, ev'ry night my honey lamb and I
Sit alone and talk and watch a hawk makin' lazy circles in the sky.
"

-----

We also have a "State Rock Song" in Oklahoma, which is "DO YOU REALIZE" by the Flaming Lips from Oklahoma City.

"Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face?
Do you realize that we're floating in space?
Do you realize that happiness makes you cry?
Do you realize that everyone you know, someday, will die?

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know your realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round."

Well officially our stare song is the Tennessee Waltz, but that is better known as the code name of a corruption probe a few years back.

So lets hum a few bars of out "real" state song - the one that's guaranteed to bring a huge cheer at all the ball games and reflects our true state spirit. (Which is - "mind yer own business")

Once two strangers climbed ole Rocky Top
Lookin' for a moonshine still.
Strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top
Reckon they never will.....

Virginia state song from 1940 until 1997

Carry me back to old Virginny,
There's where the cotton and the corn and tatoes grow,
There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime,
There's where the old darke'ys heart am long'd to go,
There's where I labored so hard for old massa,
Day after day in the field of yellow corn,
No place on earth do I love more sincerely
Than old Virginny, the state where I was born.

CHORUS

Carry me back to old Virginny,
There's where the cotton and the corn and tatoes grow,
There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime,
There's where this old darkey's heart am long'd to go.

Carry me back to old Virginny,
There let me live 'till I wither and decay,
Long by the old Dismal Swamp have I wandered,
There's where this old darke'ys life will pass away.
Massa and missis have long gone before me,
Soon we will meet on that bright and golden shore,
There we'll be happy and free from all sorrow,
There's where we'll meet and we'll never part no more.
