Boston
Chicago
Pittsburgh
New York City
Washington DC

Would it be
Boston -> New York City -> Washington DC -> Pittsburgh -> Chicago

It depends on what end you are.

Yeah you are right, Boston --> New York City --> Washington DC --> Pittsburgh --> Chicago (as the end)

or if you're coming from an area close to Chicago it would be:

Chicago --> Pittsburgh --> Washington DC --> New York City --> Boston (as the end)

My experience would tell you to go to New York before Boston, because visiting Boston first made me disappointed with New York. I loved Boston and had some high hopes for N.Y.C. after that, but IMO Boston smoked it.

I can understand this sentiment - but I want to hear your specific reasons for feeling this way ...

Really? I would expect most people to have the opposite experience. In fact, I recommend going to NYC first because it's the best of all of those.

Add Philadelphia between NYC and DC.

The best way to complete this road trip is with a car that has a four-cylinder engine. You'll save gas that way.
