Could someone point me to a reliable website they have used to look at school and educational rankings when evaluating places to live?

I have looked at a couple, but every one seems to come up with different results.

Great Schools and Neighborhood Scout are good sources. Beware that many results are based on test scores, and many areas teach to succeed at the test, and little else. As a result the school grades can be deceiving. A better indicator normally is an overall demographic glimpse. Who lives there, and what proportion of kids attend public schools.

When using a site like GreatSchools, be sure to read the parent reviews of each school. They are usually quite candid in their responses, so you get an idea of whether they believe that the school is/isn't doing well aside from standardized test scores alone.

Also, with GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community keep in mind that the rankings are based on the state standards and not national standards. Size of the district/school influences the rankings too. So, just some things to keep in mind.

I know for NY State, you can google NYSED Report Cards for more information on school/school district information too.
