I love SD and go there all the time... however all the good things about the city don't make it perfect it still has a lot of work to do.. i do think though that SD has the potential to be a great if not top 5 city in the US
SD has some great qualities but I think it is severely overrated. I give it a big no.
I have a lot of family there, mainly due to Navy involvement and many of them are not big fans either. I prefer Orange County actually.
I used to live there, and enjoyed it. I would say it's one of the better places in the county, but certainly not perfect. I know some people who visited and were not impressed. I got the impression from those people that they thought it was going to be some chill beach town like Santa Barbara, which it is not.
Pros:
beaches and coastline
neighborhoods along the ocean
ideal weather
nice downtown area for its size
Balboa Park
great vistas
can get to the mountains or desert easily to get away from it all
best Mexican food in the country
Cons:
expensive (although this is subjective)
lack of greenery
bad traffic
too suburban outside of a few areas
a lot of it looks kind of shabby or really generic outside of what are considered the upscale areas
seems to lack culture and a sense of place, at least compared to older eastern cities

Some people expect it to be fast paced like NYC or Chicago when in reality it's not and you know what? I like it the way it is. I could say the same thing about parts of other states like I think San Francisco is severly overrated and Orlando etc. I know many people and posters who said the exact opposite lol. but yeah no city is perfect.

Been there multiple times. It was ok I guess, but I never thought of it as "the most perfect". It just seemed so sprawled out everywhere and a bit boring. That's just me though, obviously people like the city.
No city is perfect, but San Diego comes pretty close. If the cost of living/ average salary ratio were better, then IMO, San Diego would be perfect. It's really a wonderful place to live, it's hard to believe that people could bash such a great city.

San Diego is the birthplace of California, and is culturally influenced by that, and by it's proximity to Mexico. Just because it has a different history than eastern cities doesn't mean it has less culture or sense of place. Traffic isn't any worse than any other good sized metro, and is a piece of cake compared to LA.
No city is perfect, but San Diego comes pretty close. If the cost of living/ average salary ratio were better, then IMO, San Diego would be perfect. It's really a wonderful place to live, it's hard to believe that people could bash such a great city.
