I heard somewhere that Providence, Rhode Island had something of a mafia presence. In the South New Orleans looks to have something of a mafia.

For other kinds of mobs Boston traditionally had something of an Irish mob and Brooklyn I believe is big for the Russian mob.

The mafia commits probably more white collar crime now adays as anything else.
In fact they always saw blue collar crime (selling drugs, extortion, etc.) as only a way to earn capital to move up in rank and one day commit white collar crimes.
Your more likely to hear about mob members manipulating stock markets, housing markets, or identity theft than selling drugs on the street or robbing people etc.

That's not true of the Chicago mob. Their main racket remains illegal gambling.

The Chinese Mafia is a big one too that is still very active. Mostly in cities like SF, LA, & NYC though.

Yeah of course.... In 1955.
Organized crime sense the the late 90s have made there biggest bank off white collar crime and cybercrime. Even gangs like the bloods participate in stuff like identity theft.

If you read the original post he specifically meant the real mafiosi - the Italian mafia.

Yeah I thought so. I only mentioned the others afterward, but I did try to think Sicilian/Italian mafia first.

Still Metro NYC, of course. But the Italian mafia is a shadow of its former self. As much as the FBI would like to take credit (Rico act certainly helped as well) by putting many mobsters behind bars, the real reason is demographics. The mafia was brought over from Sicily band thrived in America among some quite poor people. Mostly disadvantaged Italian-Americans were the victims. However, look at today. In the years since, they've advanced socially and economically and have moved into their suburbs. If you take a walk in Little Italy in Manhattan you'll find that it is essentially being taken over by Chinatown since most of them have assimilated and gone to Jersey. Even the mob bosses know to send their kids to college.

Black, Russian, and Latino gangs, on the other hand, will only seriously lose power when their demographic groups improve economically. You can arrest thousands of gang members but new ones will take their places because it's either run with the gang getting girls, respect, and cash or sit on the porch watching traffic.
