I'm not deaf, but all of the sudden I wondered are there any cities known as big "deaf culture" places. I'm guessing wherever Galludet (sp?) University is would be one, but any other big "deaf meccas."
Gallaudet University is the only liberal arts college and university for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. It's also considered the leader in ASL and Deaf Studies.
Sometimes it surprises me I don't see more deaf online. Or maybe I do, but they just don't mention it. Anyway neat answers, I thought this might be too "out of left field" to go anywhere. Keep going, etc.
Rochester NY has a large number of deaf people. There is a whole city school dedicated to the deaf from birth till age 21-- Rochester School for the Deaf. Also RIT has a college-National Technical Institute for the deaf--NTID. I believe many people who have deaf children move to Rochester because of these schools.
Agreed. Rochester actually has the highest number of deaf people per capita in the united states. That being said... I think I've only encountered people who are deaf a handful of times, but I do see people that are deaf relatively frequently.
My town of Staunton, VA has the VA school for the deaf and blind. There was one in Hampton, but the state consolidated both into one here in Staunton. I do encounter the deaf quite often here. As a result of the population not being huge here you see them often. The school is also one of the biggest in town and resembles some of UVA. At least I think so. It's also located in one of the nicest parts of town.
