What's the best place to live if you absolutely hate driving? East coast and Chicago are off limits. Doesn't have to be in a major metro area as long as it must have an airport accessible by public transportation within 50 miles.
This is dependent on where you work and what your budget is. If you choose where you live well, you can probably work out a way to live somewhere where work is accessible by walking/biking/mass transit. Los Angeles, one of the most vilified of cities when it comes to its car culture, is actually doable. SF and Oakland are also obvious choices. Seattle is also a pretty good choice if you choose where you live right (light rail goes to the airport). Atlanta is also a possible choice (also has rail service to the airport). Cleveland is also a possible choice (has rail service to the airport). I'm probably omitting quite a few places.
Many of these "New Urbanism" places have a few coffee shops, yoga studios, etc, but no real shopping. We just drove through one today like that. You'd still have to leave to go grocery shopping, and cover some busy roads on your bike. Probably safer to walk, if you don't need too much. Nor were there any stores where you could buy clothes, housewares, hardware, etc.
You could try Denver; it has a pretty good public transportation system.

Close to your job. Preferably within walking distance. Sorry I know thats probably not the info you are looking for, but it is a solution. It doesn't really matter what city you are in. As long as you can find a job and a home close together.

Your NYC pushing is useless here. Is someone paying you to promote NYC?
