So here are the large city areas (over 1,000,000 population) with the highest rates of homicide. It includes both the central city and all the suburbs surrounding it.

1. New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner, LA
2. Memphis, TN-MS-AR
3. Baltimore-Towson, MD
4. Detroit-Warren-Livonia, MI
5. Birmingham-Hoover, AL
6. Jacksonville, FL
7. Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, TX
8. Kansas City, MO-KS
9. St. Louis, MO-IL
10. Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD

Yeah I am surprised houston has a higher rate than Philly - curious where these stats are from; though I am happy to the rate in Philly has dropped significantly over the last 10 years

Yeah the crime rate in L.A. is actually dropping.

I have always heard that New Orleans has the highest murder rate in America.

I believe New Orleans' numbers are still inflated due to Hurricane Katrina, which transplanted a large portion of the those in non-poverty, ie those able to vacate with relevant ease. There are many people who returned to New Orleans, but there is a large portion - app. 30% or 150,000 people - that did not or have not yet returned.
