I started a poll this morning for Missourians on another online venue.
Out of the 80 native Missourians that have answered so far, the only ones that consider themselves Southerners are from the Bootheel area.
Did you give the folks from Souther MO the choice/option-------hillbilly ?
Growing up in St Louis, I lived in a heavily German-Jewish populated area, Ladue, to be exact, feel free to Google it.
Didnt you know that Florida is considered the 6th borough of NYC?

Not Hoosier, Hillbilly!
You have got to be kidding me.
Hoosier= Indiana which has VERY LITTLE in common with Missouri.
You dont know nearly as much about your native state as one would wish, then.
There is a thread on this very subject in the Missouri section of this forum, and numerous other citations.
This, from Wiki;
In other parts of the country, the word has been adapted for other uses (see Other uses). In St. Louis, Missouri, the word is used in a derogatory fashion in similar context to "hick" or "white trash".[2] “Hoosier” also refers to the cotton-stowers, both black and white, who moved cotton bales from docks to the holds of ships, forcing the bales in tightly by means of jackscrews.
I'll let you do your own research to find the thread here on CD.
Just as a last note, the term was common all over Missouri as early as the 70s.

nah, not the same hillbillies I am referring to.
---cotton bales-- wouldn't be found in the vast majority of Southern MO.
Way too hilly and rocky to even attempt to grow cotton in the vast majority of So MO.

I wasn't referring to the St. Louis area. I was referring to rural southern Missouri, which has a culture very similar to that of Arkansas.
