A sleeper would be the rural areas near the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area of NY. You would be about 2 hours from NYC and Boston, as well as a 2 and a half to 3 hour drive to Montreal. You would be close to the Adirondacks, Berkshires and Catskills too. That metro has close to 1 million people itself as well. You might be able to find something here: wwwrealtyusa.com

easy answer: Holland, MI An older ABC news coverage (unemployment rate has dropped since this was made.)

close to Chicago, close to Grand Rapids which isn't huge, but with a metro area of almost 1 million it is a nice clean city. Long growing season for how far north it is located.
