The NYC metropolitan area has a Japanese population. (In the year 2000 it was 4th largest Japanese community in the USA.)

1 in 8 people in Hawaii is Japanese, that's the 2nd largest ethnic group in the state (right after Filipino)
Hawaii - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Japanese used to be the largest group, but there numbers are shrinking because of low immigration rates, and high intermarriage with other groups. They used to be one of the largest Asian-American groups, now they're one of the smaller groups.

I've met more 1/4th Japanese people than half or full Japanese people.

Hawaii probably has the largest percentage-wise of Japanese-Americans than any other state followed by California [especially the Bay Area & Los Angeles], Washington state\ Seattle. After that I suppose New York City and perhaps Houston have the largest concentrations of Japanese-Americans.

I was searching this once for my sister who lives in Japan. I did a thread asking about cities with Japanese speakers.

I also find this thread.

From what I recall Southern California and Hawaii were the main places for Japanese. Although the Pacific Northwest is also mentioned a fair amount. Then there's the following at CD.

The main surprise I remember there is Salem, West Virginia. I found out that's probably because they have, or had, a college that's in partnership with a Japanese college.
