I just flew out of PIT with a 9 month old. You can get in a line for the regular old metal detector (in fact, I didn't see any other line - I think the full body scan is when they pick someone for more screening). I used a baby carrier that's like an Ergo (all cloth and plastic parts) and they made me take my son out of it and put it through the X-ray - PITA, but not what I'd call dangerous to either of us. The tough part is getting him back into it since we were running late and hubby couldn't get to us to help me (different line).
If you take a car seat and stroller (did that last time) - it will be a royal pain. They didn't let me have anyone help fold up the stroller for the x-ray and you just try taking a kid out of a car seat and folding up a stroller while holding the baby and the seat and stroller.

The body scanners are a reaction to the 2009 Christmas Day underwear bomber. They are meant to detect liquids and powders that the metal detector would miss. If you skip the scanner, you're going to have to accept the intrusive frisking.

This is actually not true. If your line has a standard metal detector, you don't yet automatically get the intrusive frisking. If your line has a full body scanner, and you opt out, then you get the intrusive frisking. There are certain conclusions one might draw from these facts....

Much as I am tempted I recognize this is NOT THE PLACE FOR THE DEBATE ON THE PROCESSES. There are other forums for that. I am trying to carefully point out things that I know to be facts based on following the issue without making it into my own commentary and opinion.

I was just at the Pittsburgh airport today as well. There remain lines that utilize only metal detectors. This does not guarantee you will avoid the whole scanner vs opt out issue, but it gives you some chance of avoiding it.

The first part of the quote is also not true; the machines were in development and indeed already in use at some airports long before the Christmas Day crotch bomber.

As far as that leak goes, just for clarity's sake, the leak of photos came from a machine used at a courthouse, not an airport.

I could talk all day on this but most of it belongs IN ANOTHER FORUM.
