Except for the hot summers, Austin fits almost perfectly. UT, the Hill Country, Ladybird Lake and Lake Travis, great live music, outdoorsy, warm winters, live-and-let-live people/culture and so on...

Ahh - I LOVE Austin! I had thought about going down there....but, yes, those summers sound brutal! Still on the back-burner, though! Thanks!

Knoxville meets your criteria just fine. Though it seems there are more hipsters these days but hopefully without the attitude. If you dress grungy you will be taken for a native!

It does get below freezing in winter - like just about everywhere. But most winter days rise above freezing if that's what you mean.
