I second those who picked Pittsburgh. A wonderful city, not overwhelming, fabulously inexpensive, lots of good food, and not particularly hot in the summer. Since you're just starting out, so to speak, you may want to change jobs or change direction a few times in the coming years. Pittsburgh has a pretty lively economy and there are lots of possibilities there in terms of jobs. I would definitely avoid anyplace where the local economy is really depressed and where cost of living is high. Pittsburgh is a great place to live cheap but nicely (and a friendly city as well).

Good luck to you in Indiana! Your post pointed out that, in this economy, we really can't always choose where we'd prefer to live but must sometimes go where the best and safest job is. Even though it may not have been your first choice, I'm sure you'll find lots to enjoy in Indiana.
