Well since I moved out of California, I say "California". But when I lived in California I would say the town or county that I lived in. It would depend if they knew the town or not.

I just moved to the Philadelphia suburbs ("Main Line" Area) from Ohio. So when asked by peeps here, I'll say "Northwestern Ohio, about an hour south of Toledo".

As a side note, where I was living in Ohio and just moved from, is just a short 20-minute drive from Findlay, OH, the town that made national headlines earlier this week when it got flooded REALLY bad in the recent floods going on in the Midwest.

I usually say "Chicago, city and burbs" as I've spent almost equal parts of my life in both.

I'm from a surburb of Cleveland so when I'm out of state I just say Cleveland. When I'm in Cleveland or a city near it, I tell people the suburb I'm from.
