Well since I moved out of California, I say "California". But when I lived in California I would say the town or county that I lived in. It would depend if they knew the town or not.
We lived all over. We are originally from the midwest. Right now we are in NH and soon we will be back in WI. I say East but people now from my accent that I am not. I tell them originally from the midwest. We have also lived out west.
I just moved to the Philadelphia suburbs ("Main Line" Area) from Ohio. So when asked by peeps here, I'll say "Northwestern Ohio, about an hour south of Toledo".
As a side note, where I was living in Ohio and just moved from, is just a short 20-minute drive from Findlay, OH, the town that made national headlines earlier this week when it got flooded REALLY bad in the recent floods going on in the Midwest.
I'm from a surburb of Cleveland so when I'm out of state I just say Cleveland. When I'm in Cleveland or a city near it, I tell people the suburb I'm from.
Northern California...its always important to make that distinction when talking to out of staters.
