They're "too stupid" to capitalize on it because it's insanely expensive to tap and would cause an environmental catastrophe. Plus, we need to get OFF fossil fuels, not drill for more.

You know which place has a really low unemployment rate? Norway - three percent. Social democracy. High taxes, high services - education, unemployment insurance, infrastructure and healthcare. I don't mind paying high taxes if I'm getting something in return. I wish Minnesota would jack up taxes, put more regulations on businesses and give us more services like cheaper college and state universal healthcare. I'm tired of the government bowing down to the behemoth corporations.

Texas Severance Tax Incentives: Past and Present

"Severance tax incentives continue to be needed in the future to encourage production and expansion of oil and gas operations, and sustain a vital segment of the state’s economy."

new york has that advantage too, same with california. new york has so much water and california has oil off the coast but they're too stupid to capitalize on that.
And Texas capitalizes on the wind power, they're a leader in this sector, thousands of jobs created in West Texas, fueling the revival of many rural communities.

Texas has some of the worst social indicators in the country. It has an above average poverty rate, child poverty rate, sky high crime and below average insurance coverage. It's taxes are low because it cares more about business than people. The state does less than most to improve the lives of it's citizens. What is the point of having a growing economy if the workers don't actually benefit?

Texas has so many illegal immigrants with poor skills and very low educational attainment...Sorry guy but with that it's normal to have an above average poverty rate, child poverty rate. And there isn't "sky high crime", it's in the US average, and very below DC, Detroit or Baltimore...
The middle-class benefits of this very good economy, and rich people too.Not the poor, but it's nothing because they're not the majority.
Look at some cities as New York City or Los Angeles : Rich are happy in their upscale housing and streets, poor are pretty happy because they're on welfare but the middle-class workers are stuck by high taxes, inaffordable housing...And middle-class = the majority of the americans. So many politicians forget that because their stupid class war.

that's not the issue. oil will be in demand for a long time. it's business. supply and demand. are you stepping up and "boycotting" oil? if you're so against oil, hop your #$@ on a bike. oh wait, you have to oil the chain. walk. oh wait, shoes are made of oil. go nude. do you know how many unemployed people there would be if people started boycotting oil? find alternative energy all you want. until that can be offered at reasonable prices and become more convenient than gasoline and save all these peoples jobs who are in the oil business and use oil for their business quit dreaming.

norway's unemployment isn't as low as you think.
Unemployment rate ‘artificially low’ : Views and News from Norway

you're tired of the government "bowing down" to these behemoth corporations, yet who do we all earn a living from? who pays you? you want higher taxes on the company you work for is what you're implying, what if taxes went up even more and they had to cut back some to save that money? would you be saying the same thing if you were laid off? that's exactly what happened to my uncle at the ford plant.

using texas as an example to show how little people have financially is a weak argument considering the median income isn't much lower than any northern state and the cost of living is much lower. then you have more hispanic migrants that you don't have as much of up north who will also lower the income stats you're spewing out.

Actually, cost of living isn't necessarily much lower as you can find metros in Upstate NY with similar costs of living as you would find in Texas or other Southern states. So, that's not necessarily true, even with the tax aspect.

Also, states like NY and California have plenty of foreign born residents as well.

It's tough to compare a state's crime rate with a city or metro area. This should help, as it goes by city: United States cities by crime rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you look at the bottom, you can see the same stats for smaller cities as well. What could skew the rate is the very sprawled out nature of Southern, Western and some Midwestern cities versus cities in the Northeast and in parts of the Midwest.
